What Is Real, Authentic Thai Cuisine?

A Taste of Thailand, From Our Home to Yours

Thai food is known around the world for its bold flavours, fresh herbs and beautiful balance. But to us at Im-Am Thai, authentic Thai food is more than simply following a traditional recipe. It is about the ingredients we choose, the way we prepare them, the memories behind each dish, and the passion we put into every plate. We came from Thailand with our love for Thai food and brought that passion more than 7,000 km to Australia. Our goal is to share the feeling of Thai food we know and love, while creating flavours that Australians can enjoy.

1. The Balance of Thai Flavours

One of the most important parts of Thai cooking is balance. Thai dishes often bring together spicy, sour, salty and sweet flavours, creating layers of taste in every bite. At Im-Am Thai, we carefully balance these flavours rather than allowing one taste to overpower the others. This is especially important when preparing food for Australian customers. We respect the traditional character of Thai cuisine, while adjusting the flavours and spicy level to make each dish enjoyable for you.

2. Fresh Thai Herbs Make the Difference

For us, Thai food starts with fresh ingredients. Thai herbs are an important part of creating the aroma and depth that make Thai cuisine unique. Lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, Thai basil, chilli and other fresh herbs are carefully combined to create different layers of flavour. These ingredients are not simply added for decoration—they are part of the identity of Thai food. When you taste our Tom Yum, Tom Kha, curry or stir-fry, we want you to experience the fragrance of these herbs in every spoonful.

3. Our Food, Our Roots

Thailand is not one single flavour. Every region has its own ingredients, traditions and way of cooking. From the northern mountains to the northeastern countryside, central Thailand and the southern provinces, Thai cuisine is incredibly diverse. At Im-Am Thai, our food is influenced by the Thai food we grew up with, including the simple, fresh and layered flavours of home cooking. We don't want every dish to taste the same. We want each dish to have its own character and story.

4. Homemade Preparation

Authentic flavour often begins before the cooking even starts. Some of our dishes are prepared using our own homemade recipes and pastes, carefully combining fresh herbs and ingredients to build flavour from the beginning. We believe that taking the time to prepare these ingredients properly makes a difference. It is the difference between simply making a Thai dish and putting our own heart into it.

5. Thai Food Is Not Always About Coconut Milk

Many people think of Thai food as rich coconut curries, but Thailand has so much more to offer. Dishes such as Tom Yum, Jungle Curry and Nam Tok can be light, aromatic and packed with herbs and spices. Traditional rural Thai cooking often makes use of what is fresh and available locally. At Im-Am Thai, we love sharing these different sides of Thai cuisine and showing our customers that Thai food can be fresh, light, spicy, rich, sour, aromatic—or all of these together.

6. Food Brings People Together

Thai food is traditionally enjoyed together. A table can be filled with different dishes, with everyone sharing and discovering different flavours. This is one of the things we love about Thai food—the food creates a reason to sit together, talk, share and enjoy the moment. Whether you come to Im-Am Thai with family, friends or someone special, we hope our food can become part of your own memories.

7. Authenticity Comes From the Heart

For us, authentic Thai cuisine is not about claiming that every dish must be exactly the same as it was in Thailand. Authenticity comes from understanding the ingredients, respecting Thai cooking traditions, balancing the flavours and knowing where the food comes from.

At Im-Am Thai, we bring our Thai roots, memories, passion and love for food to Australia. We stay true to the heart of Thai cuisine while carefully adjusting our flavours for Australian tastes. Every dish is our way of sharing a little piece of home with you.

From our home in Thailand, to our kitchen in Australia, and finally to your table. This is Im-Am Thai.
